Viva Mexico! (Mexican Independence Day)

Mexican independence from the Spaniards is celebrated on September 15 and 16. This year marked the 202 anniversary and festivities could be found on every corner. We headed out after dinner to Parque de las Palapas where there were carnival like activities going on, as well as lots of food and dancing.

We then headed over to the Municipal Palace for the cry of patriotism (Grito Mexicano based upon the “Grito de Dolores”). It was a lot of fun to be in Cancun during this major holiday; everyone celebrates, drinks, and makes lots of noise! At exactly 11pm on the 15th the local government leader leads the cry and the crowd shouts out “Viva Mexico!” This is followed by fireworks, the national anthem, and lots of cheering. They had the major N/S road closed off for the event (the equivalent of having Yonge Street closed in Toronto) and there must have been thousands of people milling about.

After the show we spent some time taking in the atmosphere. Jay and I got some cotton candy and Greg got some tequila ice cream! Everyone was wearing red, green, and white, even the small children! It was definitely an event to remember.
