Our New Mexican Family

As I mentioned in a previous post, we now live behind a nice Mexican woman’s home among a handful of other apartments. Her daughter and son-in-law (and their children) live above her house in a separate apartment. Our neighbours on both sides are also quite friendly: a very sweet middle aged woman on one side and a large family with very curious children on the other. None of them speak English very well so we are getting a chance to practice our Spanish a lot more than we were!

It is nice to have the sound of children playing and family banter around us. Today we were sitting in our place with our doors and windows open (as we usually do unless we are out) and the woman came over to say hello. We recently learned that her name is Daisy. She didn’t just come over to exchange pleasantries though, she brought us tamales! She had been cooking up a storm all day for a family reunion and brought us over two LARGE plates of home-made Yucatan tamales in plantain leaves. They were AMAZING!

We toasted again to our great luck at finding a place so wonderful! How many landlords bring over home-made food? She is a perfect example of the Mexican saying: “mi casa es su casa.” Come to think of it I think she has a sign that says that over her front door!
