Isla Mujeres

We finally made it over to Isla Mujeres (translates to “Island of Women”) off the coast of Cancun. We rode our bicycles over to Puerto Juarez and took the Ultramar ferry from there. The ferries have an air conditioned inside and an open air top section, as well as a snack bar and free WIFI (although it is quite weak).

The island is beautiful and has a much more relaxed atmosphere than the mainland. It is only 7 km long and most people get around by taxi. golf cart, or moped. We brought our bikes with us, which saves money and is great exercise!

We rode over to Playa Lancheros for lunch at their main restaurant. Jay and I ordered their famous Tikin Xik. The food was excellent, the price average and the service poor. However, the atmosphere was amazing- right on the beach with crystal clear water. We all went for a dip as we waited (a while) for our lunch to arrive.

Making Tikin Xik!

I’ve never eaten a whole fish before and was disturbed (and somewhat intrigued) to find an eyeball in my meal.  Jay was gutsy enough to try it! Ick

After lunch we headed over to the Tortugranja (Turtle Farm). We saw turtle eggs, baby turtles, full grown turtles and handicapped turtles. There was also an educational area with a variety of different turtle species as well as various other marine life. We were lucky and one of the women who worked there spent 30 min with us specifically, allowing us to handle 10 or so species!

We then headed over to Playa Tiburon to swim with a couple of nurse sharks. We got to touch them (they felt a bit like sandpaper) and one even spat water in my face! This costs between $3-5 (depending on your negotiating skills).

After a bit more riding around we headed into the downtown area for dinner. We ate at a little restaurant called Loncheria La Lomita. It is run by an odd man and what appears to be his family. The food here was amazing and the prices were fairly cheap. Jay and I split Enchaladas with mole sauce and a burrito. My brother got chicken tacos. A great end to a great day!
