Diablo- Our Little Devil

The rainy season has begun in Cancun and Jay and I have had to spend more time than we would like inside. On Sunday the sun peaked out for a few hours so we decided to go fly our kite on the beach. When we arrived at the marina Jay said he had a surprise; a few weeks ago he had come across a litter of puppies with a man who lived in an abandoned building just beside the beach. As we played with one of the puppies it became obvious that he was trying to sell him to us; he clearly needed some money. I have asthma, we are in a foreign country, and we are traveling- adopting a puppy is not a logical move. But, seeing him in those living conditions and how adorable he was my heart melted. We gave the man a little bit of money to help him out and left with our very own puppy! Ironically, he appears to be a border collie, Jay’s absolute favourite breed (his parents have owned three). It is very strange that we came across the continent and ended up with exactly the same animal we left behind!

He is a very well behaved little puppy! He rarely barks and he listens quite well! He is still a puppy though and tends to get into a bit of mischief. So, his name was born: Diablo (which means Devil in English).

We noticed fairly quickly that he had worms and fleas (both common in puppies- even more so apparently in Mexico where the conditions are ideal for parasites). The man who sold him to us told us he had gotten his shots, but we weren’t sure it was worth the risk to trust him (plus his English wasn’t very good and our Spanish is not that great yet so communication was difficult). We took him to the vet this morning and got him checked out, weighed and given medication. He returns in a week to get his shots. We took him to Mundo Animal, which we had noticed the week before while riding by. I was extremely happy with the service we received! They were very nice in the store and the vet was professional, kind, and knowledgeable. The best part is that vets are WAY cheaper here! A comparable treatment in Canada for our bunny would have cost us 8x as much.

We have not decided how long we should keep him until we find him a forever home. We may decide to keep him permanently but it really depends on my health, our travel plans, and Canadian customs. Regardless, we have given a much healthier, cleaner, and more enjoyable home then he had and we get to enjoy having a little devil running around!
