Isla Blanca- An Excellent Kiteboarding Spot

Even though the first signs of modern day kiteboarding were seen in the 1800s, the first patent wasn’t filed until 1977 and it didn’t become a mainstream sport until the 1990s. It’s still a relatively new sport, but kiteboarding is practiced by over 1.5 million people worldwide.

A kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind with a large kite, which propels them across the water on a board, similar to a small surfboard. Needing strong, consistent winds, kiteboarders tend to gather in certain areas of the world with ideal conditions. Cancun and the Riviera Maya are quickly becoming known for being one of those spots. In Cancun, especially if you are a beginner, you should be heading over to Isla Blanca.

Isla Blanca borders the Chacmuchuc Lagoon which is warm, shallow, and calm; along with the wind, these are perfect conditions for kiteboarding. The waist deep waters make it safe for beginners. That’s probably why popular kiteboarding school IKARUS has a location here. On a good day you will see many kites in the air.

Jay is learning how to kiteboard; right now he is getting a handle on flying the large kite. It’s a lot more powerful than it looks. One wrong move and you could hurt yourself, someone else, or damage your kite. We’ve gone up to Isla Blanca on numerous occasions and Jay is getting pretty good. One time we met a Russian couple who were both kiteboarders with matching kites. The husband helped Jay launch his kite before they rode off into the ocean. When he returned he took a few dunks into the water without his board which I caught on tape because it looked like fun! Perhaps once Jay gets a handle on it I’ll join him out there!
